Every one of us has experienced the power of knowledge. Our achievements are direct results of our knowledge, which we gained through education. As you all know education is the primary and most important foundation for a human being. Education stimulates economic growth, social transformation and social security. Unfortunately, in India, many people, especially children, do not have access to this most basic and important need. As per the current estimates, 50% of Indians are illiterate, of which 70% of them are in rural India. This alarming level of illiteracy has had a significant impact on our national economy. Gandhiji, once said, “Villages are the backbone of India”. This is true even to this day; 25% of India’s GDP comes from rural India in the form of agricultural products. Still, most of rural India is below the poverty line and without basic education. For India to become a developed nation, we have to work towards the goal of 100% literacy.

Fortunately most of us have had access to good education and hence are able to achieve many things in our lives. If the poor people cannot go to education, then education must go to them. It is time for us to give back something to our motherland. The root cause of most problems is illiteracy. We need to help India to eradicate illiteracy. What we need is your concern for the poor and your concerted effort to root out this illiteracy. It also needs your generosity to sustain the effort. 

Remember, many great people like Gandhiji worked hard and dedicated their lives for the freedom of our country. Because of their hard work and dedication, we are now in a better position where we can enjoy the fruits of the freedom. Similarly, we need to work hard collectively to bring economic freedom to our country. This is possible only when we can achieve a high literacy rate in the country.
