DIWALI AND FUNDRAISING EVENT 2008 - DETROIT/FARMINGTON HILLS, MICHIGAN

SPREAD INDIA organization celebrated 2008 Annual Diwali & Fundraise Event at St. Toma Church Farmington MI on Sat, Oct 18th, 2008.

The event hall was well decorated with flowers, quotations, activities, projects and pictures of Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Theresa. The event started with a prayer song by Sanam sisters.
Abhinaya School of Academy presented excellence dance items by children followed by Troy Telugu Association's (TTA) programs. The programs by TTA received wide applauses.

The main event started with lighting of the lamp by Sridhar Patel (Founder & President, SPREAD INDIA), Venkat Aekka (Board Advisor, SPREAD INDIA), Krish Dhanam (guest speaker), Dr. Naditha Pathak (Chief Guest), Dr. Srinivas Kodali (community leader), Dr. Subhir Chowdhary (Quality Consultant & author of best seller "Power of Sigma") and Dr. Mallesham Karnati (Board of Director, SPREAD INDIA)

Sridhar Patel thanked all the event coordinators and guest speakers for the evening. He briefly touched on SPREAD INDIA projects since last event Hostel activities, child labor eradication drive and felt very encouraged by new volunteers to the organizations like Prasad Pabbati, Sameer Prasad, Sai Padma, Gopi, etc. He thanked the audience for taking their time out and attending the event.

Subir Chowdary appreciated SPREAD INDIA efforts on literacy improvement in rural India. He encouraged everybody to support this noble cause.

SPREAD INDIA Chicago coordinator Sameer Prasad presented current status of projects taken up by SPREAD INDIA in 2007-2008. In addition to SPREAD INDIA Nilayam in Balemla village, there is a new hostel facility in Vizianagaram started with Smt. Sai Padma coordination. Sameer Prasad visited both these centers and highlighted challenges in converting old houses into livable hostels for orphans.

Dr. Nadita Pathak, Director for Deendayal Research Institute (DRI), presented activities of their organization started by renowned social worker Nanaji Deshmukh in MP India. The organization has vision to develop each village into self sufficiency focusing on 6 well defined targets like education, water, health, energy etc,, The presentation was very informative, and motivational and brought out the organized nature and wide reach of the organization. They are pioneers in bringing affordable solar energy to remote villages of Chitrakoot MP India.

Kish Dhanam's speech was the highlight of the event. The audience well spell bound by the passion and emotion of the speaker on importance and need of voluntary works in India. Most of incidents narrated were from Krish's personal travails as a charity worker either helping Tsunami orphans or working in remote villages of India. There was standing ovation for the speaker.

Michigan representative Andy Meisner talked about his experience with SPREAD INDIA and wrote the first check for the fund-raiser.

Venkat Aekka (SPREAD INDIA Boad Advisor) introduced all active volunteers specially school children who raised money on their own for the event. He also highlighted new challenges like growing school drop out rates and child labor which are hold back on country's literacy goals of 75%.

The event then entered into the fund-raiser segment, which despite recent job cuts and economic slowdowns, was very successful. We were able to raise around $ 50,000 donations from the hall excluding united way contributions from Ford Motor Company Employees and SPREAD INDIA outstation checks.

Shashank Mouli presented hilarious mimicry items followed by dances by Detroit Youth members. Karthik, Hrishikesh Munagala, Usha Gullapalli's dance for Aishwarya songs stole the show. Nishant Alluri's imprompto dance for Jalsa songs received lot of applause and whistles from the audience.

Shialaja Kumar Nannuru and Sirisha Marla (MCs for the evening) did an excellent job in making sure the programs flowed smoothly and introducing speakers.

This event would not have been possible without Detroit Youth volunteering at registrations/collecting donation forms/child care at the hall. Leela Prasad Pamidimukkala (DTA Youth Leader) coordinated programs and volunteers from Detroit Youth members.
Gopi Korukanti, Jiwan Prakash Sondhi, Jogeswara Rao Peddiboyina, Krishna Prasad Alapati, Leela Prasad Pamidimukkala, Padma Sanam, Rama Kakulavarapu, Prasad Pabbati, Rama Kakulavarapu, RamReddy Toomukuntla, Sridhar Patel, Sudhir Kulkarni, Sunil Reddy Marri, Umesh Rohatgi, Venkat Aekka, Vijay Vadlamuri played a key role in making the event one of the successful ones for SPREAD INDIA org.

Overall around 300 guests attended the event with families and walked away with sweet memories as well as poignant message to help fellow brethern back home.

Many underprivileged kids could go to school with our help, otherwise they would have ended up a child labor.
Many underprivileged kids could sit in the classroom with our hlep, otherwise they would have ended up sitting under the tree.
Many underprivileged kids could sit on the benchs with our hlep, otherwise they would have ended up sitting on the floor.
Many poor rank kids could able pay their college expenses with scholarship awards, otherwise thery would have dropped the college.
